Mission Statement

The Malmsbury Center For Strategic Studies (MCSS) is a relatively new organization headquartered at the end points of the Australian-American axis of democracy. The terrorists attacks against the United States and Australia of September 11, 2001 and October 12, 2002 respectively brought a new dimension to the Australian-United States relationship. The two nations, allies in peace and war in the 20th century, now form an axis of democracy against terror.

The Malmsbury Center For Strategic Studies is designed to broaden and deepen understanding of contemporary issues of strategy and policy by placing them in historical and national contexts and by referring to case studies establishing antecedents, parallels and dissimilarities.

The Center takes as its starting point the view that war is a failure of policy rather than a simple and natural continuation of it, reversing the classic Clauswitzian position. The Center will draw upon the expertize of leaders in a wide range of fields - politics, international relations, diplomacy, history, the military, economics, culture, and the arts - to analyze current developments in areas of interest to both countries as they face an uncertain new century.
